Overview:Ritonavir is an HIV protease inhibitor developed by Abbott of the United States and is used clinically for the treatment of AIDS.

Function:Ritonavir is an HIV protease inhibitor that interferes with the reproductive cycle of HIV. Although it was initially developed as an independent antiviral agent, it has been shown to possess advantageous properties in combination regimens with low-dose ritonavir and other protease inhibitors. Patients should be informed that lopinavir and ritonavir are not used as a cure for HIV; rather, they are only used to treat and manage the condition. The combined drugs also do not prevent the virus from being transmitted from one person to another.
